Naturopathic Doctor Training

Naturopathic Doctor Training

In Canada, Naturopathic Doctors are highly educated, licensed and regulated health care providers.

The journey begins as an undergrad. Potential ND students must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University. They must also complete required courses in relevant sciences like biology, biochemistry, chemistry, organic chemistry and psychology. I personally have an Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Economics (University of Waterloo) and a Master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences (University of Toronto).

Naturopathic college is a 4-year-full time program. I attended one of the only 2 accredited schools in Canada, the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, CCNM (the other is the Boucher Institute in Vancouver). At CCNM, students complete 4,500 hours of classroom training and 1,500 hours as a supervised intern. We pass many written and practical exams throughout school. And then…

In order to earn our ND credentials, we are required to pass 2 international board exams. These are written after our 2nd year and 4th year of study. NPLEX is the standard exam used by all licensing jurisdictions for naturopaths in North America.

Our ongoing competence is ensured by standards set by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO). A big component of this includes completing continuing education credit requirements on an ongoing basis.
